Sunscreen Breakdown

There are multiple different brands and types of sunscreen. Keep these tips in mind when selecting one that works best for you.

Don’t base your selection on price. It can be tempting to pick up the bottle that’s currently on blowout to save a few bucks, but this will do more harm than good. On the flip side, cheap does not always mean poor quality and expensive does not always mean it will provide the ultimate protection.

Broad spectrum. These two words on the front of the bottle are a good starting point when selecting sunscreen. Broad spectrum means the sunscreen will protect from both UVA and UVB light. UVA rays can age skin, causing wrinkling and age spots. UVB rays can burn your skin. With this in mind,“broad spectrum” sunscreen should never be optional.

Spray versus lotion. There has been no proof that one is better than the other, however certain types of sunscreen may work better for certain areas of your body. For dry skin, you may prefer a cream.A gel or spray may work better for areas with more hair, such as a man’s chest. If you do opt for a spray, it can be difficult to decipher how much has actually landed on the skin. Be sure to apply a generous and even coating.

The 30-minute rule. Applying sunscreen once you are at the beach or while in the garden just won’t cut it. Sunscreen should be applied to dry skin 30 minutes prior to going outdoors.
