A small baked ham (dinner ham) with a sweet and savoury glaze is just the thing for a smaller gathering. This quick pear chutney gives it a new twist. Make the chutney up to a week ahead and store in a jar in the refrigerator, then reheat before serving.

Preparation Time:Â 15 minutes
Baking Time:Â 1 hour 40 minutes; Cooking Time:Â 20 minutes
Makes 6 to 8 servings
1 small boneless Ontario ham (800 g to 1.1 kg)
2 tsp (10 mL) all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp (2 mL) freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp (25 mL) Ontario maple syrup
2 tbsp (25 mL) Dijon mustard
Quick Pear Chutney:
2 tbsp (25 mL) butter
1/2 cup (125 mL) finely chopped Ontario onion
1 clove Ontario garlic, minced
1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and ground ginger
Freshly ground black pepper
3 cups (750 mL) chopped peeled Ontario pears
1/3 cup (75 mL) Ontario maple syrup
1/3 cup (75 mL) apple cider vinegar
Place ham on rack in roasting pan; add water to fill pan about 1/4 inch (5 mm). Cover with lid or foil. Bake in 325°F (160°C) oven for 45 minutes.
In small bowl, whisk together flour, pepper, maple syrup and mustard. Remove ham from oven, uncover and brush all over with glaze. Bake, uncovered, for about 55 minutes, brushing with any remaining glaze after 30 minutes, until instant-read thermometer inserted in centre reads 140°F (60°C).
Quick Pear Chutney:Â Meanwhile, in small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in onion, garlic, salt, ginger and pinch of pepper; reduce heat to medium-low, cover and cook for 3 minutes until soft and golden brown. Add pears, syrup and vinegar; bring to boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and boil gently for about 15 minutes, stirring often, until thickened and pears are translucent. Season with pepper to taste, if desired.
Cut ham into thin slices and serve with warm pear chutney.
