Holistic Spring Cleaning

By Kristine McGinn

Spring is in the air! As nature gifts us with longer days and warmer weather, we naturally shed the winter blues and embrace vitality. Top of mind for most of us is opening the windows to the spring breeze and starting on our spring-cleaning lists to tidy up and refresh our homes.

Moving into this vibrant season, why not consider opening your heart and mind to a holistic spring cleaning? Your body, mind and spirit will bloom in gratitude.

Start by sweeping away old habits and routines that no longer serve you. Consider decluttering your calendar as a starting point. Say yes to things that energize you and say no to what drains you. Your time is precious; spend it wisely. Incorporate moments of joy and relaxation into your routine, whether it’s a hobby or a good belly laugh with friends. Ensuring that you have regular and meaningful social touch points is like opening the curtains and letting the sunshine in.

Consider reaching out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Send a cheerful text, make a phone call or, better yet, invite them for coffee or lunch. Volunteering is also a great way to make new, meaningful connections while contributing to the greater good. It also gives you a sense of purpose and pride. Don’t forget to practice kindness toward yourself as well. After all, even the best spring cleaning takes patience and care.

Polish up your physical health by committing to getting outdoors for a brisk walk every day. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada recommends 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Taking in the fresh spring air has a lot of benefits. Walking outside improves vitamin D levels, which is essential for good bone health. In addition, getting your steps in yields benefits to your cardiovascular health. It will also boost your mood and improve your sleep quality. Brisk walking has cognitive benefits as well and helps you to maintain a healthy weight. Grab a walking buddy to increase both your motivation and accountability.

Dust off your pantry shelves and head to your local farmer’s market to stock up on tasty seasonal fruits and vegetables. Warming temperatures and increased sunlight in the spring trigger growth of cool-weather vegetables, resulting in fresh, crisp and nutrient-dense produce. Foods harvested in their peak season are typically more nutritious and flavorful. Add a colourful salad, made with local fresh ingredients, to your plate and you will benefit from diverse nutrients and fiber that help maintain good health.

Consider scheduling a spring health checkup with your family physician. Just like inspecting your home for repairs, getting a medical checkup can identify risks early and catch issues before they escalate. Staying on track with vaccinations and screenings is a smart, proactive investment in your long-term health.

This spring, let your health be the star of your seasonal refresh. By dusting off your social life, sweeping away emotional cobwebs and polishing up your physical well-being, you’re setting yourself up for a vibrant season full of connection, joy, and energy.
